In 1992, Stefan Klincewicz, a Irish man of Polish extraction attempted something that all lottery syndicates (and players) dream of….and few think possible. He tried to buy the one million possible numeric combinations, thus guaranteeing a jackpot win. It was an unlikely ‘heist’ that took a year to plan and had many twists and turns. It resembled a ‘David and Goliath’ story as the National Lottery learned of the ‘brute force attack’ and attempted to thwart the syndicate. It was the lead story in the news as the press became temporarily obsessed with the story of the normal punter (a man who had become bankrupt in his 30s) tryin to beat the system. The ‘system’ had a more human face in the form of Ray Bates, CEO of the Lottery. While Stefan wanted to beat the system, Ray Bates wanted to save it. In Ray’s mind , Stefan was in fact threatening to destroy a game
enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people every week.
Ray set out to save it by trying to thwart Stefan’s syndicate and stop them buying all the numbers. This is the story of that head to head at the centre of the great Irish lottery heist.
